(((First arc, around after they find Krory and before they leave to find Cross.)))
"Lavi... I... I'm sorry... I just... I don't... ...feel the same way..."
Over and over, countless times her words stuck in his head. Her normally clear, sweet, joyful voice was at that time a quiet half-whimper, as if she was afraid.
Knowing her, she'd naturally be afraid to hurt him. She was afraid that if she hurt anyone close to her, she'd lose them forever.
But she'd never lose him. At least, not until he absolutely had to go.
The redheaded young man sat on the roof of the Order, a building which resembled the Leaning Tower of Pisa quite nicely. A full moon illuminated the scene. He sat on his bottom, knees up and his arms rested on them. His chin was on his forearms and his single green eye was distant, his eyebrow furrowed as if he was thinking or troubled. The midnight wind sifted through his hair, held up by a thick black and green headband.
He thought back to that moment, remembering every detail perfectly...
~~~
Allen had just come back from a mission, luckily unharmed, and went straight to bed. Lenalee had just come out of his room after checking on him.
Now's your chance! Lavi thought to himself, trying to gain confidence. You may never get this chance again! You may leave at any time! C'mon, Bookman Junior, c'mon!! He peeked out from behind a corner as Lenalee gently closed the door behind her, then began walking his way. He quickly ducked his head back, his heart pounding heavily.
He composed himself as she came around the corner. "Ah, Lenalee!" he greeted her.
"Eh?" came the small curious noise as she looked at him, arms folded on her lap. She was carrying her infamous clipboard. She had to interview each exorcist after they returned from a mission for any important details. Sometimes, a report needed to be written by the returning exorcist, but it seemed as if Allen got lucky, this time.
"Lavi, what is it?" her innocent voice chimed in his ears, her mouth a curious dot on her slender face. Her violet eyes unnerved him and caused his palms to sweat.
"U-uh, well... I wanted to talk to you," he started off, scratching the back of his head bashfully.
"About what?" the oblivious girl asked, slightly concerned. "Lavi, are you feeling well?"
"Ahahaha... W-well... About that..."
"Yes...?"
"Well..."
He took a breath and calmed himself. He was a Bookman; he shouldn't let his emotions get to him like this. His eyelid lowered a bit and he looked at her seriously.
"Lenalee..."
"Hm...?"
"...I..."
Lenalee's purple eyes were completely focused on him, still unknowing as to why he was acting this way.
"...I..." he closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. "...love you."
The 16-year-old Asian girl looked stunned, utterly speechless, her arms not moving in the slightest. Lavi turned his head away. "I know you don't feel the same way... I can tell... that you... like Allen the way I like you."
"...L-Lavi... I-"
He suddenly turned to her with a bright determination in his eye, fists held in front of his chest as if he was pumped to complete a goal or ready to win at something. "But that's not gonna dampen my mood! I don't care what's going on between you two, because-"
"Lavi!"
He stopped, realizing that he was ranting. "Ah, gomen..." he muttered, tilting his head down while still looking at her.
She looked to be on the verge of tears, her folded hands trembling lightly. He made a slight noise of surprise and began to reach out a hesitant hand to comfort her, but drew it back when he realized that it was not his place to do so right now.
"Lavi..."
"Lenalee," he began, a gentle, warm smile on his caring face. "I just want you to know that if you ever lose interest in him, I'll always be waiting. If he turns you down, I'll be here to hold you."
Her bangs shadowed her face and her head was tilted down so he could only see the tears as they fell. He looked worried.
"Lavi... I don't... ...feel the same way..."
"Ah, but you might later!" he piped up, trying to get her to smile again.
"Lavi... I... I'm sorry... I just... I don't... ...feel the same way..."
"Lenalee..." He frowned.
"I just.. don't... And I don't know if I ever will!" she took off running, tears glistening down her face.
"Lena-" he reached out for her, but she was already gone. He returned his arm to his side, sighed, and put on a sad smile. "Rejected again. Oh well..."
He walked off to the stairway that lead to the roof. Story of my life, huh...
~~~
So there he sat, thinking back on all of that via his Perfect Memory.
Then he gave an easy-going smile. No worries, Bookmen have no need for a heart... The pain will pass.
